French Gilt Bronze and Champlevé Enamel Figural Mantel Clock, Circa 1860–1870

$10,900.00

An exceptionally decorative antique French mantel clock dating to the mid 19th century, circa 1860–1870, executed in gilt bronze or ormolu and beautifully embellished with intricate polychrome champlevé enamel decoration. The clock features an elegant architectural case with a stepped, molded pediment, richly ornamented base, and classical columnar supports decorated with colorful floral and ornamental enamel motifs in shades of blue, turquoise, red, and white, contrasting beautifully against the warm golden finish.

The circular clock face is centrally positioned within an elaborate gilt surround and features traditional Roman numeral hour markers, complemented by an intricately decorated central design. Particularly charming are the sculptural gilt bronze cherub figures positioned on either side of the clock, while the upper section is crowned with a magnificent figural composition depicting two playful putti flanking an ornamental urn, creating an impressive and harmonious decorative arrangement. Additional finely cast foliate details, architectural moldings, and decorative mounts throughout demonstrate the quality of the craftsmanship.

The reverse features the clock's original-style mechanical housing and access panel. The combination of sculptural bronze work, colorful enamel decoration, and classical figural elements is characteristic of the elaborate French decorative arts produced during the late 19th century, particularly the Belle Époque period. A striking decorative timepiece that would make an elegant addition to a mantel, console, library, or collector's display. It measures 21 inches high by 13 inches wide and 6 inches deep. In great working antique condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use.
