Impressive 19th Century French Sèvres Style Ormolu Mounted Porcelain Covered Urn
An impressive and monumental French Sèvres style porcelain covered centerpiece urn, made in France in the early to mid-19th century and richly mounted with gilt bronze ormolu. This large decorative vase displays the refined craftsmanship and elaborate ornamentation typical of high-quality French porcelain objects of the period. The exterior is exquisitely hand-painted with detailed figural and landscape scenes. One side depicts a finely rendered cityscape with castle, trees, and pond, while the opposite side shows a romantic garden scene with a goddess in period attire playing with putti, surrounded by lush scenery. The paintings are executed in soft harmonious tones and are signed by the artist in the lower left corner, adding to the quality and authenticity of the work. The decoration is set against a pink and white ground and enhanced with extensive raised gilt gold ornamentation throughout the body, neck, and handles. The urn has an elegant baluster form with a wide body and narrower neck, fitted with two porcelain side handles decorated with matching gilt details. The removable cover is set within an ornate bronze frame and surmounted by a foliated knop finial, while the base is formed by a substantial round foot in gilt bronze, giving the piece stability and a strong architectural presence. The combination of hand-painted porcelain, heavy gilding, and finely cast ormolu mounts reflects the high level of French decorative art production in the 19th century. Because of its impressive scale and rich decoration, this covered urn is a true statement and conversation piece, suitable for display on a console, pedestal, or large sideboard, and easily adaptable to both classical and eclectic interiors. The urn stands approximately 37 inches high and about 15.5 inches wide, giving it a commanding and elegant presence. Overall in great antique condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use, and free of chips, cracks, or repairs.
