Victorian Mahogany Writing Box / Lap Desk by Wilson & Co, Scotland, Circa 1880

$2,900.00

An elegant 19th-century Scottish mahogany writing box or lap desk by Wilson & Co. of 71 George Street, Edinburgh. The original manufacturer's label, preserved on the underside of the writing box, identifies Wilson & Co., established in 1817 by William Wilson, manufacturers of dressing, writing, and jewel cases.

The rectangular hinged writing box features a beautifully decorated mahogany exterior with delicate contrasting inlaid scrolling motifs and geometric ornamental borders. The front is particularly attractive, displaying finely detailed decorative inlay that complements the warm tones of the mahogany. The hinged lid opens to reveal a fitted writing interior with leather lining, providing a practical and elegant surface for correspondence and writing activities.

The writing box is presented on a custom-made mahogany stand with four straight legs and connecting stretchers, transforming the portable writing desk into an attractive and functional occasional writing table. Its compact proportions make it suitable for a library, study, bedroom, or private office.

An appealing example of Victorian Scottish craftsmanship, combining decorative inlay, practical design, and an original maker's label. It stands about 20 inches high by 18.5 inches wide by 10.5 inches deep. The piece is in great antique condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use.
